1. What Is the NovaStar VX600?

The VX600 handles both video processing and LED screen control in one box — no separate video processor needed. A single unit drives up to 3.9 million pixels, with a maximum output width of 10,240 pixels and height of 8,192 pixels, making it well-suited for ultra-wide and ultra-high LED screens.

It accepts a variety of input signals and supports stepless output scaling, low latency, and pixel-level brightness and chroma calibration, so what shows on your LED wall stays sharp and consistent regardless of the source.

3. NovaStar VX600 Key Features

The VX600 is built around a few core capabilities that make it a practical choice for professional LED display projects.

(1) All-in-One Design

The VX600 combines video processing and LED screen control into a single 1U rack unit. You don’t need a separate video processor — one device handles both, simplifying your setup and reducing points of failure on-site.

(2) Three Working Modes

Switch between Video Controller, Bypass, and Fiber Converter modes depending on your project. In Bypass mode, the output is pixel-to-pixel with no processing applied, keeping latency to as low as 1 frame when synchronization is also enabled. In Fiber Converter mode, the device extends your signal up to 10 km via single-mode fiber.

(3) 3-Layer Support with Full Control

The VX600 supports one main layer and two PIP layers simultaneously. Each layer can be independently sized, positioned, and prioritized. You can also adjust opacity per layer and crop the input source — useful for complex stage layouts or multi-source displays.

(4) Multiple Hot Backup Options

The VX600 supports redundancy at three levels: between devices, between Ethernet ports, and between input sources. If the primary device, port, or signal fails, the backup takes over seamlessly — no black screen, no manual intervention.

(5) Up to 10 User-Defined Presets

Save your layer configurations as presets and recall them with a single button press. Presets store layer status, input source, size, position, priority, cropping, opacity, and input color settings. You can also copy and rename presets directly in V-Can.

(6) Pixel-Level Brightness and Chroma Calibration

Working with NovaLCT and NovaStar’s calibration software, the VX600 supports per-LED brightness and chroma calibration — removing color inconsistencies across the screen and improving overall image uniformity.

(7) Automatic Screen Brightness Adjustment

Connect a light sensor to the VX600 and it will automatically adjust the LED screen brightness based on ambient light conditions. Night mode is also supported, capping brightness during specified hours to prevent over-illumination.

(8) Audio Output Support

Connect Ethernet port 1 or 2 to a multifunction card to enable audio output to an external speaker. You can select the audio source per layer (main, PIP 1, or PIP 2) and adjust volume directly from the front panel.

(9) Software Control via NovaLCT and V-Can

Beyond front panel operation, the VX600 integrates with NovaStar’s NovaLCT and V-Can software for screen configuration, Ethernet port backup setup, firmware updates, and device backup/restore — giving you full control from a connected PC.

4. Three Working Modes of VX600

The VX600 supports three working modes. You can switch between them from the front panel menu under Working Mode.

4.1 Video Controller Mode

This is the standard operating mode. The VX600 functions as a full all-in-one controller, handling both video processing and LED screen driving in one device.

In this mode, all LCD menu functions are available, including layer management, preset settings, input backup, synchronization, and display control.

vx600 video controller

A few things to note about the connectors in this mode:

  • OPT 1 is self-adaptive — it works as an output when connected to a fiber converter, and switches to an input when connected to a video processor.
  • HDMI output is used for monitoring at a fixed resolution of 1920×1080@60Hz. Do not manually change this resolution via Advanced Settings > HDMI Output, as it will affect the Ethernet port output.

4.2 Bypass Mode

In Bypass mode, the VX600 works as an independent LED display controller with no video processing applied. The input signal is output pixel-to-pixel, exactly as received.

This mode is ideal when your signal source is already configured correctly and you want to eliminate any processing overhead.

vx600-bypass-mode

Key limitations in this mode:

  • Only the main layer is available. PIP 1 and PIP 2 cannot be used.
  • Video processing functions are unavailable.
  • Low latency and Genlock cannot be enabled simultaneously in this mode.

When low latency is enabled in Bypass mode with synchronization also turned on and data running vertically on the screen, the VX600 can reduce the delay from input to receiving card to as low as 1 frame.

4.3 Fiber Converter Mode

In Fiber Converter mode, the VX600 acts as a signal receiver and distributor for long-distance fiber transmission. Both OPT 1 and OPT 2 are used as input connectors in this mode.

vx600-novastar-fiber-converter
  • All 6 Ethernet ports output the data received from OPT 1.
  • When OPT 2 carries different data, it acts as a backup — if OPT 1 signal is lost, the system switches to OPT 2 seamlessly. When OPT 1 resumes, it automatically takes over again.

Transmission specs for reference:

  • Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2): up to 10 km, wavelength 1310 nm
  • Multi-mode fiber (OM3/OM4): up to 300 m, wavelength 850 nm

In this mode, only three menus are accessible on the front panel: Working Mode, Communication Settings, and Language. All other settings are locked.

9. FAQs

One VX600 unit drives up to 3.9 million pixels, with a maximum output width of 10,240 pixels and height of 8,192 pixels. If your screen exceeds this, you can cascade up to 4 units together using the image mosaic function.

It accepts HDMI 1.3 (×2), DVI (×1), 3G-SDI (×1), and OPT 1 fiber input. HDMI and DVI support up to 1920×1200@60Hz standard, with custom resolutions also supported. 3G-SDI maxes out at 1920×1080@60Hz.

Yes. If you run into EDID compatibility issues with a Mac, enable the EDID Compatibility mode under Input Settings. This was added in the V1.5.0 user manual update.

In Video Controller mode, the VX600 processes the input signal — you get full access to layers, presets, scaling, and all menu functions. In Bypass mode, the signal passes through pixel-to-pixel with no processing, and only the main layer is available. Bypass is useful when your source is already correctly configured and you want minimum latency.

In Bypass mode with both low latency and synchronization enabled, and data running vertically on screen, latency can be reduced to as low as 1 frame from input to receiving card. Note that low latency and Genlock cannot be enabled at the same time in Bypass mode.

Yes. HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 form a hot backup group. If the primary source loses signal, the VX600 switches to the backup automatically. You can also enable “primary source preferred” — when turned on, the system switches back to the primary source as soon as it resumes.

Connect the VX600 to a PC via Ethernet cable, then update through either V-Can (System > Firmware Update) or NovaLCT (Advanced Synchronous System User Login > enter “admin”). Download the latest firmware package from novastar.tech under DOWNLOADS > Processors > VX600.

Go to Factory Reset in the main menu. There are three options: Reset (Save IP) keeps your network settings intact, Partial Reset preserves network, Fn, language settings and imported files, and Reset All wipes everything back to defaults.

Yes, when connected to a light sensor. Set it up through NovaLCT (V5.4.4.6 or later) under Brightness > Auto Adjustment. You can configure brightness mapping by ambient light level and set a night mode with a maximum brightness cap during specified hours.

Connect Ethernet port 1 or 2 to a multifunction card, then link the card to an external speaker. You can select which layer’s audio to output (main, PIP 1, or PIP 2) and adjust the volume from the front panel. Volume ranges from 0 (silent) to 100 (loudest).

10. Conclusion
